U.S. Department of Labor Approves National Apprenticeship Guidelines for Solar Industry

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has taken a major step toward strengthening the nation’s clean energy workforce by approving national guidelines for Registered Apprenticeship programs in the solar industry. Announced on February 3, 2025, this initiative was developed by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) to create a structured approach to workforce training in solar project installations.

The approved guidelines provide a standardized framework for companies, educational institutions, labor unions, and trade associations aiming to establish federally recognized apprenticeship programs. By following these guidelines, industry players can implement high-quality training programs that align with federal workforce development standards.
A crucial component of this initiative is the Construction Craft Laborer apprenticeship, which equips apprentices with hands-on experience supporting solar energy installations. These apprentices will work alongside skilled tradespeople, including electricians, carpenters, and ironworkers, gaining valuable technical and safety training necessary for large-scale solar projects.
The rollout of national apprenticeship guidelines comes at a time when the solar and energy storage sectors are experiencing rapid expansion. With increased federal investment in clean energy and ambitious climate targets driving the transition to renewable power, the demand for a skilled solar workforce has never been higher.
By providing a structured pathway for training and workforce development, these apprenticeship programs will help bridge the labor gap while creating accessible opportunities for workers seeking sustainable careers in the clean energy industry. The initiative is expected to improve workforce retention, enhance job readiness, and ensure that solar projects across the country have the skilled labor they need to succeed.
